Pallete Tips from Artist Jeremie Bonamant

As a mini painter (and traditional artist who sometime uses acrylic paints) I use one of these:

Sta-Wet Premier PaletteCalled a “Sta Wet” or “Wet Pallette”  Basically if you don’t use this, it might be worth the time / expense because your mixed colors won’t dry out so fast.

Which is great for keeping your paints longer.  It’s also not cheap when you have to replace the papers.  I never had to replace my sponge until I left it sitting for several years and it crumbled.  The papers, however, can be difficult to find for some people, or expensive if they’re not in stock at your local craft store.

Jeremie Bonamant suggested baker’s paper instead.  This is something much more easily accessible for most people.  It’s probably also cheaper (depending on your region.)

My local Walmart carries a roll that’s over 1 ft x 33 ft for under $5.00.  That’s a LOT of painting.

Note that I haven’t tried this, personally, yet.  Once I run out of the expensive stuff made for the pallette I fully intend to try it.  Considering what it’s made for and the feel of both materials, I don’t see why it won’t work.

Let’s talk matte / dull coat sealers for Miniatures - Testors, Krylon, Plaid, and Vallejo

Let’s talk matte / dull coat sealers for Miniatures – Testors, Krylon, Plaid, and Vallejo

Last year, Testors Dull Coate was my go to sealer for all my miniatures.  I’d spray 3 coats of Krylon or Rustoleum gloss for protection then spray a layer of Testors to kill the shine.  A little gloss brush on from Vallejo for weapons, slime, or water, and the figure would be done.  This miniature was sprayed with the old version of Testors dull coate.  (Yes, I said “old version.”  Keep reading…

Photos can’t do this massive diorama justice.  This is from the Darksword Miniatures line (based on Larry Elmore’s artwork.)  The original painting is called “Teamwork” and Darksword made this fabulous set of miniatures to go with it.  I assembled it as far as the customer wanted, used Milliput to fill in the joints (easy work considering how large a figure this is) and painted it on commission.  Beautiful resin and metal combination set.
